Five rounds between Replika and Nomi AI, the most common switch for people who want a companion rather than a picture generator: memory, companionship, romance, images and privacy. Nomi wins on memory, romance and privacy in the creator’s view, Replika on polish and voice calls, and neither is built for images.
Memory does not transfer between apps: whichever you pick, you start over. Apps that let you write a profile or memory notes (Nomi, Secrets AI) make that restart much shorter. Spend the first session telling the new companion who you are; it pays off later.
